Eclectic Notes
The SapirWhorf hypothesis theorizes that thoughts and behavior are determined (or are at least partially influenced) by language.
- William James speaks about the way categories shape and define both what we think and see. [PWald understands his work]
Amazing TED talk saying that language defines what we think: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKK7wGAYP6k
- Lera Boroditsky — some cultures are extraordinarily well directed because of their language focused on it. As a result, time is also locked onto the landscape
- languages struggle with counting/comparison because they do not have languages
- English speakers assign more culpability (e.g. broken vases). Spanish speakers remember the intention more but not who did it (e.g. it was broken, but not who by)
- stop blaming, address the situation
Implications
- the most powerful aspect of communication is framing. Framing drives belief.
- that is relevant in x, x, x, x, ideas
- If one culture couldn’t discover algebra because of their language missing number words, I wonder what our language misses and what we have yet to discover due to that.
- language defines culpability whether it’s active/passive
- We can create new languages which give us more ways to think
